Case Western Reserve University’s free online courses – a bigger hit than expected

I read an article today By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer : Case Western Reserve University’s free online courses exceeded expectations. I find this incredibly interesting – especially since my education was far from free.

We’ve learned that students need more visuals and their attention span lasts on average only 15 minutes, but we’re also solving some bigger problems:

Richard Boyatzis of CWRU’S Weatherhead School of Management is incorporating aspects from his online “Inspiring Leadership Through Emotional Intelligence” into his classroom courses. He said that in the future the time it takes for a graduate student to get a degree could be reduced, saving thousands in tuition, by combining the best of online learning with classroom teaching.

It seems to me that this is ineviable, so may as well embrace it. But most of all, with the impending student loan bubble burst looking over us, it may give hard working young adults (and old adults) a viable means for achieving a higher education than has been available in the recent past.
